What Are Shortcodes?
Shortcodes are placeholders in your Airbnb Scheduled Messages that automatically fill in specific information from your listing and guest’s reservation when the message sends. Instead of manually typing each guest’s name and check-in time, shortcodes do it for you.
Why Should You Use Shortcodes?
Shortcodes make every guest feel personally valued.
Here’s an example of a personalized message:
Hi [guest first name], looking forward to seeing you on [check-in date]
And here’s another generic message which feels impersonal:
Hi there, looking forward to your arrival
Using shortcodes is the easiest way to add personalization to automated messages without extra effort.
What Shortcodes Are Available on Airbnb?
Airbnb offers shortcodes for:
- [guest first name] – Guest’s first name
- [check-in date] – Date of arrival
- [check-in time] – Scheduled check-in time
- [check-out date] – Date of departure
- [neighborhood] – Your listing’s neighborhood
- [city] – City where property is located
- [address] – Full property address
- [guidebook] – Link to your digital guidebook
- [house rules] – Your property’s house rules
- [getting around] – Local transportation information
When composing a Scheduled Message in your Airbnb Inbox, a drop-down menu appears automatically. Click it and select the shortcode you want to insert. Airbnb will automatically replace it with the actual information when the message sends.
The shortcode will display as “unavailable” in the message sent to the guest. This looks unprofessional and confusing. Before using Scheduled Messages, make sure your listing has complete details—neighborhood description, house rules, address, check-in instructions, and any other information you want to reference in shortcodes.
Yes, shortcodes work in both Scheduled Messages and Quick Replies. They’ll automatically personalize quick replies you send manually to guest inquiries as well.
Shortcodes work within Airbnb’s Scheduled Messages and Quick Replies system. Third-party property management systems (like Hospitable or Guesty) have their own variable systems that work similarly but use different syntax.
